I. Greetings/ Farewells Ohayou Gozaimasu/Ohayou – Good Morning Ohayou Gozaimasu is the polite way to say it, but when in familiar settings, ‘ohayou’ is perfectly acceptable. This is typical used in the morning, from the time you wake up until around lunch time. Sometimes, if it is the first time you’ve seen the person that day, and you are just starting something like school or work, and it’s a little past lunch time, you can still use ohayou. Konnichiwa-Hello Konnichiwa is the way to greet someone around any time of the day, though it is most often used towards the middle of the day until around dinner. Konbanwa – Good Evening Konbanwa is used in the after dinner hours, usually when it’s dark. This shouldn’t be confused with ‘Oyasumi nasai’, which means good night. Moshi Moshi – Hello (telephone) Moshi Moshi is hello on the telephone. A more masculine way to say it is to cut off the “ee” sound the ‘I’ makes at the end. Oyasuminasai/Oyasumi- Good Night This is what you would say to someone when you are about to go to bed. Sayornara-Goobye/Farewell This is typically used for long goodbyes, where you might not see the person for a while. Ashita Mata/Ja Mata – See you tomorrow/see you later Used for shorter goodbyes. Slang Osu~ – Yo. Yo!- Hey! Ja ne~- See ya~ Ja- Later |
