Power Making for Dummies

With the increase of new members lately, I thought it would be helpful to introduce a simple profile/character creation advice column. There's a lot of questions and uncertainties that come up when you're making a new character (or even bringing an old one) to a new board. This thread is going to help you along with your character's power creation process, and hopefully expedite your approval process.

Let's start with the basics....

We all want to have some sort of unique power, if any, and we want it to be effective when we put it to use, of course. But since Shinya uses a leveling system, when you first start, unless you have special permission, you start at level 8, which is our equivalent to level 0. So when you're giving your new character powers, you should take this into consideration.

You WILL level up, so save some room for growth and new power discovery and expansion. You'd like to get stronger, right? When you're first starting, there's no need to pump your character full of power steroids, but it is a good time to set a base for power growth.

Judging Powers

When mods are looking at your powers for approval, we're looking for some key things.

- Limits: number of posts something can be used, number of times per thread something can be used, number of posts to recharge, ect ect.
- Capacity, just how much fire can you control or weight can you lift with your mind?
- Drawbacks? any side effects when you misuse or over use your powers?

We understand some powers, like telepathy can just not be turned off, and there really is no limit to how many times you can use it. But powers like pyrokinesis there is a lot we need to know. This is where we want to see limits in relative posts, not time. Time is too vague and subjective. When you're creating your powers, if need be, please include these limits and things will probably go a lot faster.

The Points

So where should you put your attribute points? Good question. Those points are going to determine your strengths, and partially, weaknesses.

Physical- This stat is related to everything physical about your character. Defense, Strength, athleticism. all of that. A 0 in this category means your character has a physical wellness and capabilities of a normal human being for their age, height, and weight. Anything above a 0 is above average. A 1 would be like a high school athlete, a 2 would be an intermediate martial artist or someone who goes to the gym very often, a 3 would be something like a professional athlete, 4 and up becomes super human.

Chakra- This is for all powers that come from 'energy' or 'spirit' power ( spirits as in inner soul/whatever stuff) Think of it as inner energy, and raw energy. A 0 means a normal human with no abilities or control over any chakra whatsoever. Values of 1 or 2 means something like a novice just learning to channel or sense chakra. Anything 3 and above becomes super human.

Elemental- This pretty much speaks for itself. All elemancers should have a value of at least a 2 in this category in order to have any real control over their element. At the value of 2 someone would be able to feel bonded with that element and do very very very basic things with it, like make fire swirl around in their hand. 3 and above becomes super human. at 15, it is having control of your element. As in, there is no struggle to control what you can do anymore, thehn it's all about buffing your level so it hurts more XD.

Supernatural- Any powers relating to unexplained abilities, such as seeing ghosts, freezing time, walking through walls, going invisible, ect ect would fall under this category. Everyone has a little bit of supernatural in them, so not until 4 points can your power be outwardly manifested. This means at 1-3 points at best you'd get tingles in a haunted house or maybe you'd be super intuitive.

2 power limit?

Yes, there is a beginning 2 power limit. This means as you just start you are allowed only 2 separate powers. You can receive a third later. Two separate powers, however, does not mean you can make an overarching power then chose several that fit below the umbrella of that category. Let me show you an example.

Power 1: Ninja Arts

Super Naruto Attack - turn into naruto and beat someone up with a giant pair of chopsticks.

Super DBZ Attack- turn into goku and eat a lot of rice to power up

Super Saiyin Sephiroth Midgar Canon Attack- summon meteor and be a mama's boy

KiraKira Hot Guy Attack- Take off shirt and dazzle ladies with shoujo roses and sparkles floating around.

Obviously, even though they are all under the umbrella of Ninja Arts, they are in a way separate abilities. If this is the case, you may start with 2 of the abilities under Ninja arts, and add more as you earn levels. When you add more, this will count as leveling your power up, not adding another ability entirely. This also applies to magic spells.

Martial arts and weapons?

This is a big question category. I want to say right now NO GUNS. Don't ever ask again.

When you have a sword, it counts as equipment, but you have an automatic ability slot used up by weapon proficiency, unless you explicitly state your character has no idea how to use the weapon... but that would be pointless anyways.

Martial arts above street brawling does require one ability slot.
