" May I please have another?" Nao said, but couldn't quite get the 'v' in have to sound unlike a 'b'. English was hard, and definitely not her strongest subject. " May I please have- v-v....Mouuu!" exasperated, Nao threw herself back into her seat and pushed the English text book away from her. She didn't want to see it at all. She'd been having enough trouble reading all that old kanji in the books the monk had been giving her. Speaking of, she needed to ask Otoha to help her decode some of the words.

" Can we stop for this morning?" Nao asked Otoha, hoping he'd like her quit early. She'd asked him to tutor her in English this semester, due to a rumor about a school trip to NewYork. She wanted to be able to mingle with American's and shop at the sophisticated stores... though she admitted she would be too small to wear most of the clothes.

Before Otoha could protest, Nao changed the subject. " Nee, Otoha, after school, could you come over for a little while?" she laid her arms on the desk and leaned forward, looking at Otoha who sat beside her. " There's..," she glanced around the room to make sure it was still empty, aside from a few ghosts, of course. Still, in a quieter voice, she continued. " There's some kanji in those old books I was telling you about. They're super old so I'm having problems reading it." she winced. Otoha was so smart, and while Nao was pretty intelligent herself, sometimes she felt bad asking him for so much help. " I'll cook something," she pressed her hands together and leaned her forehead into them as if praying. " Onegaii~"

Had it been anyone else, his patience, which was hard to come by as it was, would have been tested and pushed to the most extreme of limits. Ever since the rumors about a trip to America first started flying around the school, even amidst all of the eerie wake left behind by the collapse of the 106 and the three fold attack on the school, the less lazy of the Shinkou students suddenly all seemed eager to learn as much of the foreign language as possible. Lucky for me Nao can keep a secret, thought Otoha as he took the heavy, pristinely kept textbook into his hands and replaced it in the small leather backpack that sat beside his chair. Had anyone else learned that the dark haired, high marked second year was fluent in the language, he was sure that he would have been bombarded by countless more requests for tutoring and weekend training sessions. Having to tutor one person was more than enough for him.

However, Otoha hadn’t seen Nao so frustrated since the last time he refused to let her cook, so had she not openly expressed that she wanted to quit for the day, the dark haired boy probably could have put two and two together. If you quit when it gets difficult, you’ll never learn it in time, Otoha was going to say. Then every time you have to go to the bathroom I’m going to have to ask for you. But before he could even open his mouth to speak, Nao’s voice swooped in and deftly changed the subject.

" Nee, Otoha, after school, could you come over for a little while?"

He made to ask what for, sweeping his almost-too-long bangs out of the way of his cloudy grey eyes and the image of the honey haired girl who sat beside him, but again, before he could speak, Nao spoke first.

" There's…there's some kanji in those old books I was telling you about. They're super old so I'm having problems reading it."

That’s right, thought Otoha, looking from Nao’s sunset gold eyes to the closed classroom doorway. Ever since he had first met her, Nao had been incredibly apprehensive about letting others in on her secret. In fact, if he hadn’t overheard the harsh words of her old best friend that day in the rain by the gazebo, he was sure he still wouldn’t have known that Nao had the clairvoyant ability to see ghosts. Well…maybe she would have told me, he thought in passing. Things had changed a lot since them, most significantly the fact that when they walked somewhere now it was usually with Nao’s arm laced around his own or their hands threaded together at their sides. Regardless, once Otoha felt certain that there was no one in the hallway who could come by and accidentally overhear their conversation, and after Nao’s offer to cook for him, he spoke up.

“As long as the books aren’t falling apart, I should be able to read them,” said Otoha, his eyes now finding Nao’s again. “Saiko is filling in for me tonight, so if you want to go now we can get an early start.”

It was unlike Otoha to ask anyone to fill in for him at work—as it usually worked vice versa—but Otoha needed the extra time that night for his own personal studies. But that was neither here nor there. However, before Nao had a chance to accept or decline his offer to get started right away on deciphering the old kanji in the books she had received from the Shrine, he looked unconfidently down towards the smooth polished top of the desk. “You…really want to learn more about your powers, don’t you?” It was strange to even say the word ’powers’ around Nao. Ever since they had first met, despite the both of them having supernatural abilities, not to mention both attending a school where the vast majority of the other students around them had them too, the subject of powers and abilities had never really worked its way into a conversation. It was only through overhearing Nao’s exchange with her friend, and the putting of two and two together with all the times he had thought she was talking to an imaginary friend, that he knew she could see ghosts. And he knew Nao had some idea about his powers, as there had been more than one occasion, including their first actual words to each other, where his Second Whisper had divulged more to her than he wanted. But outside of that, the lack of conversation or acknowledgement about the subject almost made it seem taboo.

“I guess…I never knew you were that interested in them.” He almost felt bad saying it, like he didn’t know his own girlfriend. Though to be honest, he thought, looking Nao in the eyes as deep as his grey pools would let him, I think there’s still a lot I don’t know about you.

" Oh...," Nao paused. Maybe Otoha wasn't the most open guy about his feelings, but as she'd gotten to know him, and as she'd tried to understand him, she'd become familiar with the subtle changes in his facial expression, or even the tone of his voice. And right now, she could tell there was a thorn poking at him. " Ah!" she waved her hand in front of her, dismissing it. " It's not like I've really bee interested in them very long. It's sort of a recent thing.... But," she changed the subject again, " Why did you take the day off? I know it's not because you knew I'd ask for help." Nao smiled. " You're not a psychic."

With this distraction, she slowly shut her English book and slid it off the desk, so she could put it away in her book bag beside her feet. " Is everything alright?"

She almost changed subjects too quickly for him to think of a way to change it again. It had been careless of him to even mention that he had taken off work that night. All things considered, if anyone in the world knew him best, it was Nao, and she would have known that whatever would cause Otoha to ask someone to cover for him at work wouldn’t have been a trivial matter. Nevertheless, Otoha slid out from his seat and began to gather his own things, treating Nao’s question almost as thought it weren’t necessary, or the answer was painfully obvious.

“No, I’m fine,” said Otoha, hoisting his leather pack onto his jacketed back. “I just have some extra practice I want to get in.”

It had only been a week since his father had pushed him over the edge of the old, closed down shopping mall in the shady district of Shinya. Had his father’s suspicions been wrong then, and Otoha wasn’t developing the power of flight, the last thing the dark haired seventeen year old would have been worrying about at that moment was how to change a subject. As he adjusted the weight of his pack, he looked down to Nao. “So…what makes you want to find out more about your powers?” It actually puzzled him when he first learned that Nao was paying visits to the Shrine in search of…training or further education about her abilities. Especially in light of all that had happened to bring her to Shinya in the first place. “I thought you didn’t really care for them much.”

" Yeah...," Nao smiled to herself and tucked her hair back behind her ears. " I didn't think I did either." She folded her hands ontop of eachother over the desk, and hooked her ankles together below it. " But you know, if I have them, I shoulder understand them, right?" She tilted her head a little in thought. " And I thought that maybe I could be useful if I learned more about what I can do... I think it might help a lot of people." she reflected on what she had told Sy on the hospital rooftop. She'd help Sy meet her dead brother, once she figured out how to summon spirits.

" Besides," Nao's smile grew. " I don't really mind the company so much anymore...," she must have been talking about her ghosts. Nao had mentioned being followed before. What kinds of ghosts followed her? Well, probably students, since they were at a school. And it would be no surprise if she had a lot of attention from guy ghosts, after all, Nao was cute. Luckily for Otoha, they were all dead, so posed little competition. But wait! if Nao saw them like real people and could touch them...impossible!

The only thing our abilities do is make us different, and that’s not always a good thing. At least that’s what ran through Otoha’s mind when Nao spoke so wholeheartedly about her sudden interest in her powers. I guess I can understand, he continued, looking down towards his feet at the fuzzy reflections of the overhead lighting. What with all of these attacks going on…but outside of that, what good can these powers do anyone?

His face betrayed no signs of the thoughts that swam through his head at the mention of super natural abilities and any notion of them being helpful. Instead he nodded in understanding at Nao and made to shift the weight of the bag that now rested on his shoulders. At the mention of her spiritual ‘company’ Otoha’s eyes immediately jumped from her right shoulder to the other, as though he expected to see some smoky figure floating there. There had been a few times since he learned of Nao’s powers that he actually thought to acknowledge that there was a ghost with them, but more often than not it slipped his mind. “Is there…one there now?” He asked, still looking around her as though it would suddenly appear to him.

“Anyways…I guess if that’s what’s going to make you happy, then you should keep at it.” He was trying hard to mask his dislike for the different and paranormal, and for the most part he thought he was doing a good job. “Maybe…you’ll have better luck with it than with your English.”

" Eh? C-chotto!" Nao stood up suddenly. What did he mean about her English? With laid both of her palms down flat against her desk. " What's wrong with my English?" Nao frowned, and crossed her arms, throwing her pout in Otoha's direction. She really was trying... maybe not as hard as she should have been, but she was. She stepped aside from behind the desk and planted her feet firmly in front of Otoha.

" I can speaking English." She said confidently, her arms still crossed defiantly. Her pronunciation may have been a bit better this time. Nao didn't often become flustered so easily, but the determination to show Otoha she could do it was evident in her face. Nao could never mask her feelings from the expressions she showed the world. But maybe that was Nao's charm.

" I am Shiroki Nao. I am student from Shinya High School." she said, trying to recall what her book had written out for her. " I am 16 and I like to cook delicious foods. My boyfriend is ...," she paused, searching for the word. " so serious." the beginnings of a grin began to appear on Nao's face, though she didn't drop her arms and defensive posture. " He is not smile. He is shy, I think." Nao stifled some laughter.

“Well…a lot of things,” he started to say in response to Nao’s quarry about what exactly was wrong with her English. But before he could even finish his sentence he found himself face to face with frustratedoffendeddeterminedflustered Nao Shimai—the shock of which proving to be enough to turn his last few words from clearly spoken ones to unintelligible mumbles.
Of all the reactions Otoha Yuudai had expected Nao to have in wake of his jab at her English, having her stand, full posture, less than a centimeter from the polished square toe of his designer boots was not one of them. But despite the sudden fierceness of her determination, despite how she so clearly tried her hardest at pronouncing every word and syllable and character with the right intonations and mouth sounds, despite how defiant she was to Otoha’s suggestion that she’d have more luck with her spiritual studies than with her attempts at speaking the foreign language…Otoha couldn’t help but feel the beginnings of a laugh start to tickle in his throat.

And it wasn’t just because Nao looked completely ridiculous trying to look so strong and determined. Well…not completely. It was because, despite all of his detachments to the standard stock of emotions a boyfriend would feel in a relationship, he couldn’t help but think Nao looked totally and completely…well…cute. That was, of course, until her L’s that sounded like R’s and her incorrect use of ‘speaking’ changed to jabs at Otoha.

His amusement suddenly morphed into an expression of flat brows with equally curveless lips. Whatever, he thought. I’m not that serious…

“I’m never smile,” said Otoha in English with a roll of his eyes. “But talk like that in New York and I might.”

He had to give her credit, though. She was doing better than most would, especially given how little they had actually worked together on it. “I guess it’s not that bad,” said Otoha, putting a hand up on his hip while locking eyes with Nao. “It’s not all that good…”

" You can say that because you're good at everything." Nao eyed Otoha up and down enviously. It was hard to stack up to someone who took top of class on every exam and spoke two languages fluently. Nao could... bake. How disheartening. But Otoha could cook too, she remembered the wonderful taste of his curry. Man, there really wasn't anything he couldn't do. He was good looking too, and athletic; a lot of girls must have liked him, now that she thought about it. Did he ever have a girlfriend before Nao? How many girls at Shinko liked him? Nao really hadn't considered this before. Really, what was a guy like him doing with a girl like her? Nao's perkiness visibly dimmed as she turned back towards the desk, and reached down to grab her school bag. Otoha was right, the sooner they get started the better. She was going to need a lot of practice, wasn't she?

" Someday," she set the bottom of her bag down upon the desk. " I'll find something you're not good at." She smiled to herself. " Because then I'll feel like maybe you're not totally out of my league." Realizing she must have sounded awfully depressing, Nao quickly recovered with a coy smile. " Maybe I will be a horrible girlfriend and exploit Otoha Yuudai's one weakness."

" Don't worry." Nao bounced slightly on her toes and shook her head. " I wouldn't do that." She stepped in a little closer to Otoha and tucked some honey locks behind her ear, leaning towards him. " So you can tell me your weakness." she cupped her ear as if he'd really tell her.

Out of my...what? I’m not good at everything

To say the least, with the exception of that one rainy day by the gazebo, Otoha had never seen Nao’s almost visible sunshiny aura dim to such dull, hopeless shades of grey. He had no idea what she meant by being out of her league …but he could tell from her crumbling fortitude that perhaps he was being a little too harsh. There are plenty of things you’re good at, Nao, he thought as he tilted his head down to see her less-bright-than-normal sunset eyes. And lots of things you’re better at than me. Like knowing what to say to cheer someone up, for starters…

Thankfully, the task of lifting her spirits wasn’t rested in Otoha’s hands, for after a quick moment, a smile worked its way back onto Nao’s lips and she was, for the most part, back to normal. But…what’s all this talk about my one weakness? So far as Otoha knew, he had no weaknesses. If he could survive living on the streets for a few years while maintaining high marks in school, he couldn’t possibly have a-

And then Nao moved in closer to him…and all at once, despite it being out of a teasing offering of her ear for his secret weakness to be whispered in, Otoha found himself reminded of that moment under the finale burst of fireworks at the Matsuri not all that long ago. Had Nao been any further away from him, she undoubtedly could have seen the pale rouge tint pop up in his fair skinned cheeks. And had Otoha been any more inexperienced in dating than he was, he probably would have just remained frozen in place. But despite the sudden jump in the pace of his heart beat and the rush of blush to his cheeks, what he did next just seemed…natural. Instead of leaning down to her ear to divulge whatever weakness it was he supposedly had, he instead leaned further forward, slipped a hand beneath her chin, and ever so gently, pressed his lips against hers.

It was their second kiss, but left Nao just as melted as the first. Really, Otoha was good at everything. Nao managed to ground herself off cloud nine long enough to crack open her sunset eyes as Otoha's kiss came to an end. A smile spread across her face as her small hands found his and interlaced their fingers. " May I have another please," the 'v' still sounded like a 'b', but it was close enough.

" Gomen!" a small voice came from the doorway. Nao's eyes swept towards it. She saw a small girl with dark brown hair tied back into a ponytail standing frozen at the entrance. " Sorry, I didn't mean to walk in..."

" Eh?... Ah!" Nao quickly released Otoha's hands and jumped back at least a foot. " It's ok!" she waved her hand at the girl dismissively. " We're sorry for taking up this class room. We were heading out anyways..." She smiled though her face was lit up like a red bulb. Quickly, Nao gathered her bag. " We'll get out of your way, heh." She bowed her head lightly in apology. " Ikou?" she said back to Otoha.

Otoha’s face had already flushed a deep rouge as his lips separated from Nao’s and she placed her request to ‘hab’ another kiss. But as he leaned forward, slightly more confidently than the first time, to give her just that, the door to the classroom opened and ‘red’ became an understatement for the bright colour in his cheeks. With Nao releasing his hands, he took two very large steps backwards, nearly knocking his backpack clean off the top of the table it had rested on.

“…yeah, let’s go,” said Otoha to Nao’s request to leave as he shouldered his backpack. To say the least, Otoha was at a loss. It was only his second kiss, almost third, so…should he feel embarrassed that someone saw? Or almost saw? Did they see? Are couples not supposed to kiss in public places? Well…the classroom was empty, and it’s after hours, thought Otoha. So this isn’t really considered a public place…but…is…this bad? If Otoha really was supposed to be good at everything, he was clearly discovering that somewhere along the lines he missed the class on dating and how to do it.

Despite his cheeks still being a few shades deeper red than they should have been, and his mind being flustered with confusion as to what exactly he was supposed to thinkfeeldo in that moment, when his steps took him to Nao’s side, let his hand drop from his jacket pocket and find hers. Lacing his fingers around her hand, he looked down to her height, and to the girl in the doorway. “Sorry again…the classroom’s yours.”
